Red Fang

What do you get when you mix heavy metal, hard rock, and stoner metal together in a cauldron with long hair and big beards thrown in the mix? What you get is Red Fang!

Making up this band you have Bryan Giles on guitar and vocals, Aaron Beam on bass and vocals, David Sullivan on guitar, and John Sherman on drums. Each one of these guys have been around the Portland, Oregon band scene for a while and have no doubt made an impression on anyone that attended Mayhem Fest this year.

Their self titled album starts off with "Prehistoric Dog" and keeps you locked in until the last song "Witness." There are very few albums I can listen to the whole way through from start to finish without skipping a track. Just when you get to the more mellow slower paced song "Humans Remain Human Remains" the album picks it back up with "Good to Die." If you have yet to see the bands first music video I highly suggest you do yourself and favor and watch Prehistoric Dog.

With Red Fang's second album "Murder the Mountains" there is much improvement over the production and over all sound of the music. The boys really stepped it up with the first track "Malverde", a sludgy hard hitting song with thunderous drums and bass along with distorted guitars and keeps it going with the catchy guitar rifts and lyrics in "Wires." The band released their second music video along with this album. This video has money, explosions, comedian Brian Posehn, a 1979 Impala station wagon, milk, a pinball machine, and lots and lots of things getting smashed up! Check it out!

Red Fang is currently on tour with Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Check out Red Fangs website for tour dates as well as songs from both albums!

The Lost Souls Club

"My body has never felt like home: it grinds and tears and gets worn down, no different to a stone."
-I Know I Spoke Too Soon

The Lost Souls Club is made up of some friends from overseas. I was introduced to these guys offhandedly by a friend from the UK who was subsequently friends with the lead singer of tLSC. tLSC is made up of Jon Tufnell, Simon Jackson, James Freemantle, and Jon Lamont. Their sound is unique, pleasant, but somewhat dark and with an astonishing depth of sound. Click the link at the bottom of this post to listen to their song "I Know I Spoke Too Soon", and you'll see what I mean. Far easier to show you than tell you what I mean. You'll be leaning into your speakers to hear every last syllable Jon utters (am I in love? Maybe just a little bit).

Recently, I was able to ask Jon a few questions, so here's a mini interview to get you more acquainted with them as a band, and to get your hopes up for future US shows!

Me: Who are some bands that inspired you as a musician?

Jon: Well there's the bands that inspired me to take up music in the first place like Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and The Hollies. All my dad's old records. Then there's the ones that are inspiring our sound now: The White Stripes, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Gliss, Johnny Cash, Springsteen's Nebraska album, Neil Young, The Kills, The Dead Weather, Led Zep, Nine Inch Nails. The list is ongoing.

Me: Are you enjoying international touring?

Jon: Yep, international touring has been an eye opener and a true pleasure. It's what I have been dreaming of doing since I started playing music so I'm like an excited kid. Any minor gripes are just too small to bother mentioning.

Me: Have any intentions of touring in the States?

Jon: We'd love to tour the USA, however at this stage that decision has a lot more to do with booking agents, labels and the like than it does to do with us. A lot of our favourite bands are American and to get over there and gig with them would be incredible.
